Shaun lit up his smoke and leaned against the rail of the front porch. It was winter time and the nights were silent as could be. No crickets chirped or none of that shit. I lit up a smoke and his heart poured out.
"What time is it?
"10:3O," I said.
"Good, It's early. I have to wake up at 7 to go meet my Dad," he continued. "I'm trying to get this job as a property manager for this hotel uptown. They ran a background check and the last time I got arrested was 2006 for my DUI and then went to trial for it in 2007 and apparently I got charged with distributing to minors, which I wasn't fucking charged for. So now I'm trying to get all of my arrest records and trial records. On top of this my roommate still hasn't paid me for bills so I'm scrounging by. I coasted into work on fumes. I had to borrow 20 bucks from a co worker so I could get home. So I called my Dad and I gave him the situation."
Non missing a beat he went on. "I said, Hey pops, I need all the information from my last DUI, I'm trying to get hired and need all the documents, anything and everything. And I need that 60 bucks for helping you install your new furnace." there was a pause on the telephone.
His father spoke in a deep but understanding voice "Meet me at my work at 7:30. I'll pull everything from my file cabinet and I'll give you 60 bucks in cash."
Shaun threw his cigarette on the ground and then he looked at me and said, "Thanks for the beer."
I looked back and said "Hey man, Thursday is the new Friday, so I'll see you tomorrow."
He laughed, got in his car and drove away.
I'm thinking this story should get epic and the father in the story should be trapped in a flood that threatens his life and, more importantly, his file cabinet. He finds a way to make the filing cabinet float and sails it to dry land.
let me know what you think

I like this. Another thing you could add to the story is that the hotel he's applying to is impossible to get back to. So when he realizes he can't get to his Dad, he tries to plead with the hotel, but he can't find it. Everyone he asks tells him somewhere different. And he used to walk by it every day. A place lost in time.
ReplyDeleteI just wrote this one a few weeks ago when I was fucked up and am not really into it, we should collaborate heavily on this one. You should just start adding to it and I'll do the same.
